    Here's the VIN codes for the U.S. Models:

    240Z, 260Z and 280Z VIN codes are in the following sequence:
    G = 2+2, 4-seater (no "G" means it's a 2+0, 2-seater)
    H = L24 Engine (240Z)
    R = L26 Engine (260Z)
    H = L28 Engine (280Z)
    L = LHD (Left Hand Drive) (no "L" means it's an RHD - Right Hand Drive)
    S30 = Model (the 240Z, 260Z & 280Z's are all S30's)
    The last 6 digits = Serial Number

    280ZX VIN codes (thru Feb. 1981) are in the following sequence:
    H = L28E Engine (280ZX)
    G = 2+2, 4-seater (no "G" means it's a 2+0, 2-seater)
    S130 = Model (280ZX is the only S130 Z model)
    The last 6 digits = Serial Number

    280ZX (3/1981-6/1983) & 300ZX (7/1983-2/1989) VIN codes are in the following sequence:
    JN1 = Nissan Passenger Vehicle
    H = Non-Turbo (L28E Engine for the 280ZX and VG30E Engine for the 300ZX)
    C = Turbo (L28ET for the 280ZX or VG30ET for the 300ZX)
    Z0 = S130 (280ZX only)
    Z1 = Z31 (300ZX only)
    4 = Coupe (2+0 (2-seater)
    6 = 2+2, 4-seater
    S = SRS (Standard Restraint System for the 300ZX) (not available on the 280ZX)
    * = check digit (0-9 or X)
    B = 1981 280ZX
    C = 1982 280ZX
    D = 1983 280ZX
    E = 1984 300ZX
    F = 1985 300ZX
    G = 1986 300ZX
    H = 1987 300ZX
    J = 1988 300ZX
    K = 1989 300ZX
    X = NISSHA Plant
    The last 6 digits = Serial Number

    300ZX (2/1989-7/1996) VIN codes are in the following sequence:
    JN1 = Nissan Passenger Vehicle
    R = Non-Turbo (VG30DE Engine)
    C = Turbo (VG30DETT Engine - the TT means twin [2] turbos)
    Z2 = Z32 (1990-1996 300ZX)
    4 = Coupe (2+0, 2-seater)
    6 = 2+2 (4-seater)
    7 = Convertible (also known as a "Vert")
    A = No Air Bags
    H = Driver's Side Air Bag
    D = Dual Air Bags
    * = Check Digit
    L = 1990 300ZX
    M = 1991 300ZX
    N = 1992 300ZX
    P = 1993 300ZX
    R = 1994 300ZX
    S = 1995 300ZX
    T = 1996 300ZX
    X = NISSHA Plant
    The last 6 digits = Serial Number

      Additional Decoding for Z31 Model Plate care of AZ-ZBum's Site (http://www.az-zbum.com/faqs.shtml#basic2):

      How do I decode my model plate info? Base model is:

          * No T-Tops
          * 2 seater
          * SF trim
          * Manual Transmission

      Look on the model plate located on the driver's strut tower in the engine bay. Read the model information line. Write this information down. Use the following to decipher the model information.

          * "K" = T-Tops
          * "H" = VG30 engine.
          * "L" = Left Hand Drive.
          * "G" = 4 seater
          * "Z31" = Car model designation
          * "X" = GLL trim
          * "J" = GL trim
          * "S" = Shiro trim
          * "A" = Automatic transmission
          * "T" = Turbo
          * "N" = Canada
          * "V" = California
          * "U" = Rest of the United States
          * "C" = Manual Climate Control
          * "G" = Automatic Climate Control
          * "L5" = 50th Anniversary Model
          * "W" = Leather Seat (Japan Made)
          * "Y" = Leather Seat (US Made)
          * "D" = Digital Instruments (used after Feb '87)
          * "F" = Monochromatic (paint - used after Jun '88)
